What are Brainwaves?

Our brain is made of billions of brain cells, called neurons. These neurons communicate with each other through electrical signals. This combination of electrical activity is often referred to as a “brainwave pattern” – because of the cyclic, or “wave-like” pattern of the signals.

These patterns have been given different names, depending on their frequencies, and the states of mind typically associated with those frequencies. Research has shown that specific brainwave patterns mean that you’re in a particular state.

That means our brainwave frequency can actually determine our state of mind. So, if we could change our brainwave patterns, we could actually reproduce that original state of mind.

What Is Brainwave Entrainment?

Putting two swinging pendulum clocks next to each other for a few hours, while they may initially rock out of sequence, they will soon synchronize and swing in-line with each other.

This phenomenon in the world of science is known as “entrainment.”

The same happens with the brain. If we can play a frequency to it, our brain will “entrain” to – or follow – that frequency. This is called brainwave entrainment.

In other words, if we “played” a 10Hz frequency to our brain, it would follow that frequency.

What Are Binaural Beats?

In 1839, a Prussian physicist and meteorologist known as Heinrich Wilhelm Dove uncovered that by playing two different frequencies in each ear, the difference between those frequencies is realized inside the head – a perceived sound, also known as a binaural beat.

For example, if we played 400Hz into the left ear, and 410Hz into the right ear, the difference of 10Hz is actually heard by the brain. In other words, he found a way of playing a really low frequency directly to the brain. This discovery helps us to overcome the problem of humans can typically only hear between 20Hz and 20,000 Hz (20 kHz) where the frequencies for creativity and relaxation ranges from 4Hz to 40Hz.
